Andrew Davenport biography

Andrew Davenport portrait image

Andrew Davenport 42 has a BSc in speech science and is the co-creator and writer of the Teletubbies and In The Night Garden television series and books. He has also directed and produced for the Teletubbies and is also an actor, appearing as the character ‘Tiny’ in Tots TV.

It was whilst working as an actor on Tots TV that he first met and worked with Teletubbies and In The Night Garden co-creator and executive producer Anne Wood CBE. It is without doubt Andrew Davenport’s writing on both shown and subsequent books that has inspired both parents and children alike with his fun and fantastical use of language from a young child’s perspective. He has also courted controversy with claims of teaching children bad language skills with the use of phrases such as Eh-Oh for Hello (Teletubbies) and such characters as the Tombliboos (In The Night Garden) who’s names ‘Un’, ‘Oo’ and ‘Ee’, represent the numbers ‘One’, ‘Two’ and ‘Three’ as a toddler would say them.

Nominated in both 1999 and 2000 for a Daytime Emmy alongside Anne Wood for Teletubbies, he has since won two BAFTA Children’s Awards for his work on both Teletubbies (2002) and In The Night Garden (2007)

Davenport lives in London and has five godchildren aged between 10 years and 10 months old.

Fantasy Book Review spoke to Book View Cafe member, science fiction author and memoirist Chris Dolley in February 2010.

Special Feature: Understanding the author of Alice in Wonderland

Image: The Mystery of Lewis Carroll book cover

Lewis Carroll, the elusive author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, has been the subject of enduring fascination for the past hundred years. The destruction of many major documents about his personal life by his descendants has only magnified the mystery. Jenny Woolf's biography, published to coincide with the release of the new Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland film, lays waste to the myths and suspicions that have obscured Carroll's reputation by placing him firmly in the context of his own time.
