My wife and my sisters went to watch The Golden Compass at the cinema on Sunday. They had all read and thoroughly enjoyed the book and said that although the film was good there were too many unnecessary changes. In particualar, Mrs Coulter becoming more maternal  than she was in the book was a strange choice as her being cold and distant really defined the character.
