A first edition of JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit has been sold at auction for £60,000. The 1937 novel was sold at Bonhams in London for twice its predicted value.

Since publication The Hobbit has sold more than 100 million copies, not bad for a book written to entertain his own children.
