The movie version of Michelle Paver’s highly successful fantasy novel Wolf Brother was first scheduled for a 2007 US release but news has been think on the ground since. Encouragingly though is the fact that Ridley Scott’s name is still attached to the film, due to be distributed by 20th Century Fox. Four years ago, on a remote Indonesian island, fossilised remains were found of a metre-tall people whom the anthropologists dubbed hobbits after JRR Tolkien’s invention. The hominids lived around 18,000 years ago and there is now a debate raging as to whether the hobbit were, like our ancestors, Homo sapiens but stunted and retarded due to iodine deficiency in pregnancy or that they were a brand new species called Homo floresiensis. The Runelords series from David Farland will reach its seventh outing with the release of The Wyrmling Horde in September 2008.  There is however no update on the movie front with the prospect of the series being adapted into a trilogy now becoming unlikely. Hopefully The Wyrmling Horde will be a return to form for Farland following the distinctly average offering in The Lair of Bones, Sons of the Oak and Worldbinder.   David Farland biography, bibliography, interviews and book reviews ... read more

On the 6th March 2008 a man called Gary Gygax died. It is a name that probably does not mean a great deal to many but he was one of the creators of the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. The fantasy genre is possibly the oldest form of story telling and the invention of Dungeons & Dragons breathed new life and created new interest in the fantasy works of JRR Tolkien. Some believed that the role-playing game was basically The Lord of the Rings in a game format. D&D’s ... read more
