Fantasy author JK Rowling has donated seven adult edition Harry Potter books, all signed to Accio UK to help them raise funds for the National Literary Trust. Six out of the seven books will be auctioned at the Accio 2008 Conference whilst the winner of a raffle will be presented with the seventh book. Baltimore, USA - Maps drawn by the hand of JRR Tolkien himself will be going on exhibition at The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore between the 16th of March and the 8th of June 2008. Two maps of Tolkien’s that will be featured are Thror’s Map from The Hobbit and the topographical view of Minis Tirith featured in the third book of the Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King. The Lord of the Rings Online was the 2007 PC game of the year. JK Rowling visited inmates at an Edinburgh prison in a bit to motivate them to read more and to present them with awards. A London based charity Shannon Trust helps prisoner across the UK to learn to read and they were delighted that Rowling was able to spend time with the prisoners and to provide them with the incentive to continue reading. Fantasy author Philip Pullman drew a crowd of 700 fans to his sold out evening at the Oxford Town Hall. Pullman is publicising his new book, Once Upon A Time in the North which features two characters from his popular His Dark Materials trilogy. The main hall and the galleries were packed in the town hall with children and adults eager to hear the author discussing his works. In Edgbaston, Birmingham, near to where the young JRR Tolkien grew up is a tower called Perrott’s Folly. The tower is 96ft high and is the inspiration behind the tower of Orthanc, the home of Saruman the wizard in the Lord of the Rings. Tolkien’s own drawings of Orthanc have the same window structure as Perrott’s Folly.
