Warner Bros’ lawsuit against Mumbai-based banner Mirchi Movies for its upcoming film “Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terrors” was heard this week in the Delhi High Court.
In its deposition Friday, Mirchi Movies’ legal counsel claimed there was no copyright infringement evident in “Hari Puttar” as Warner Bros, maker of the “Harry Potter” film series, claims in its case presented by New Delhi-based counsel Anand & Anand.
Well-known Indian politician and lawyer Arun Jaitley argued on behalf of Mirchi Movies stating that, “To determine a phonetic similarity between ‘Hari Puttar’ and ‘Harry Potter,’ one would have to look at the spelling, pronunciation, context, language and relevance of words in that language.”
Jaitley added that the upcoming Indian film’s main character is a boy whose full name is Hari Prasad Dhoonda and that “his father fondly calls him ‘Hari Puttar’.” “Puttar” means “son” in the Punjabi language.
