The Authors’ Licensing & Collecting Society’s (ALCS) is sponsoring the opening lecture at ‘Shipping Lines’ Liverpool’s first ever literary festival, part of the city’s program as European Capital of Culture, 2008.
“We are delighted to be supporting both Philip Pullman, one of the great writers of our time, and the city of Liverpool in its role as European Capital of Culture,” says Barbara Hayes, ALCS Deputy CEO. “As ALCS works around the globe to promote and protect authors’ rights it is important that we are associated with and support such a prestigious event at this time in Liverpool’s history.”
As well as its work on behalf of writers in the Europe and further afield, ALCS sponsors a number of events across the UK each year targeting both national and regional writing communities and the wider public. In August they sponsored the Edinburgh Television Festival, and this Autumn they are supporting major literary events in Bath and Liverpool.
“It is an important part of our communications strategy to visit different regions of the UK each year holding regional consultation events for our members,” explains Barbara Hayes. “This gives us an opportunity to communicate our plans and ideas for the future and to hear first hand what our members think about the activities we undertake on their behalf.”
Running from 3 - 9 November the Liverpool Literary Festival has booked a stellar line up of writers.
Philip Pullman was born on the 19th October, 1946 in Norwich, England. Pullman is best known for the series of books entitled His Dark Materials, the award winning children’s literature consisting of Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass.

TWILIGHT is an action-packed, modern day love story between a vampire and a human. Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) has always been a little bit different, never caring about fitting in with the trendy girls at her Phoenix high school. When her mother remarries and sends Bella to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she doesn't expect much of anything to change.
