Sandman movie?

Fantasy author Neil Gaiman says it’s inevitable that his comic book series The Sandman will be made into a movie.

“We’re getting closer and closer to the point where you could make a Sandman movie, just because the world is changing,” Gaiman told the Los Angeles Times in a wide-ranging interview about the fantastic comic’s 20th anniversary.

“The thing that has really made it practical for the superhero movies to exist is the simple fact that you can put it on screen now. With trying to make superhero movies over the years, it has always been that you simply couldn’t do it. They would say, ‘You will believe a man can fly,’ but you really wouldn’t. Now, you pretty much can.”

With Coraline, a 3-D, stop-motion animated film based on Gaiman’s novel of the same name, set to hit theatres in February, the writer said he has high hopes and some nagging fears about bringing his Sandman series to the silver screen.

“The only thing I hope for is that whoever it goes to has the same amount of passion for it that Peter Jackson brought to Lord of the Rings,” he said. “I want someone who will make the film because he loved it and he cared about it and if anybody was going to screw it up, it was going to be him…. There is someone out there. Or there will be someone out there in five or 10 years.”

This is what DC needs to do to bring more of their title to the mainstream. Except for the so-called Trinity (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman) and others that appeared on the 80’s Justice League cartoons, most people are not familiar with DC’s characters. This is a shame since they are affiliated with Warner Bros. Hopefully the Watchmen movie along with a Sandman movie will make more people aware of the great titles and characters that DC has always had.

Special Feature: Understanding the author of Alice in Wonderland

Image: The Mystery of Lewis Carroll book cover

Lewis Carroll, the elusive author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, has been the subject of enduring fascination for the past hundred years. The destruction of many major documents about his personal life by his descendants has only magnified the mystery. Jenny Woolf's biography, published to coincide with the release of the new Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland film, lays waste to the myths and suspicions that have obscured Carroll's reputation by placing him firmly in the context of his own time.
