Borders UK Supports Children’s Graphic Novels With New In-Store Bay

Borders UK announced today that it is launching a bay of children’s graphic novels in all its stores from Thursday 5th March. In an exciting new initiative, the first of its kind in the UK, Borders will be establishing a new promotional bay which will highlight a wide range of books and authors from a variety of publishers.

Commenting on the launch this week, Jane Harris, Sales Director at Walker Books, said: “It’s fantastic to see Borders backing the Children’s Graphic Novel genre so proactively, and we are excited to be working with the team on this new initiative. Graphic novels are part of a major growth area in the children’s market, and Walker has an exciting publishing programme in place for 2009. We look forward to working with Borders to continue developing the new children’s range of graphic novels in the future.”

Sales of adult graphic novels at Borders last year increased substantially and children’s buyer JP Hunting said that his decision to launch in the Children’s section now ‘reflects this growth’. Borders is marking the launch with a “multibuy” offer and the new bay will form a key part of the children’s section’s ongoing promotional programme. Olivier Cadic, Managing Director of Cinebook Ltd, added: “Cinebook has emerged as the premier worldwide publisher of Franco-Belgian bandes dessinées in the English language, with bestselling series such as Lucky Luke, Blake & Mortimer and Iznogoud. We are delighted that Borders are taking this opportunity to give this area of children’s publishing the attention it rightly deserves.”

Some of the key titles included in the bay this week are: Simpsons Comics: Strikes Back by Matt Groening (Titan Books, RRP £4.99); The Savage by David Almond (Walker, £7.99); Wicked Wiles of Iznogould by Goscinny (Turnaround, £5.99); and Artemis Fowl Graphic Novel by Eoin Colfer (Penguin, £9.99).
