Game of Thrones pilot to be filmed in Northern Ireland

A US television pilot of fantasy author George RR Martin’s bestsellers is to be filmed in Belfast this autumn. The wonderful fantasy epic series A Game of Thrones will be produced by cable network HBO in the city.

A set at the Paint Hall in the docklands will be used and there are hopes the entire series could be filmed there, a boost for the local economy. Recently, Universal Pictures announced it was filming Hollywood blockbuster Your Highness at the same site in the city’s Titanic Quarter.

Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson said: “This is the first time that a TV production of such vast size and scale has been filmed in Northern Ireland. It will be a welcome boost to the production sector, helping develop the industry here and bringing employment and investment to Northern Ireland.”

The pilot could be worth up to £10 million, film sources said. Jobs will be created with extras, construction workers, caterers and electricians. It will take around 10 weeks to prepare and shoot. Up to 600 jobs could be created if the entire series was shot there, with years’ worth of production.

Heir of the mad Dragon King deposed by Robert, he claims the Iron Throne.

In 1996, George RR Martin began work on “A Song of Ice and Fire”, a series of books inspired by the War of the Roses (a series of civil wars fought between the House of York (white rose) and the House of Lancaster (red rose) for the English throne in the 15th century). The fourth book; “A Feast of Crows” became The New York Times No.1 bestseller.

Image: The Mystery of Lewis Carroll book cover

Lewis Carroll, the elusive author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, has been the subject of enduring fascination for the past hundred years. The destruction of many major documents about his personal life by his descendants has only magnified the mystery. Jenny Woolf's biography, published to coincide with the release of the new Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland film, lays waste to the myths and suspicions that have obscured Carroll's reputation by placing him firmly in the context of his own time.
