McCarthy and Dinklage sign up for HBO’s Game of Thrones

Director Tom McCarthy and actor Peter Dinklage are joining HBO’s Game of Thrones, an epic fantasy pilot of author George RR Martin’s best-selling “A Song Of Ice And Fire” novels.

Filming of Game of Thrones will being in Belfast, Northern Ireland in October.

McCarthy wrote and directed 2003’s Station Agent and 2007’s The Visitor. Both earned him Indie Spirit Awards.
Dinklage, who worked with McCarthy on Station Agent, will take on the pivotal role of Tyrion Lannister, the Queen’s cunning brother who is spurned because of his size. The casting of Tyrion is a critical step for the pilot, as the fan-favourite character carries surprising resonance as he navigates the novel’s deadly subterfuges.

Martin expressed satisfaction with Dinklage’s selection, calling it a bit of “dream casting.”

In 1996, George RR Martin began work on “A Song of Ice and Fire”, a series of books inspired by the War of the Roses (a series of civil wars fought between the House of York (white rose) and the House of Lancaster (red rose) for the English throne in the 15th century). The first book published from this series was “The Game of Thrones”, and the fourth book; “A Feast of Crows” became The New York Times No.1 bestseller. Readers and critics alike acclaim the series.
