Asian fantasy novelist published aged only 14

Ambia Khatun has something to smile about – she’s just had her debut novel published. The first in a series of six, Black Dragon, was picked by US publishers, Xlibris and is now available in paperback.

“This is very exciting for me. When I got the first copy of my published book I was in shock. My family came around to have a look, everybody was overwhelmed especially my parents, we had our own little launch just with the family at home.” said Ambia.

Black Dragons was inspired by Rowling’s Harry Potter series. It centres around the story of Annie, the new girl at school. As Annie embarks on a new journey forging new friendships whilst old ones are broken, magical secrets are revealed. Annie must decide who she can trust as she faces her destiny.

A fan of fantasy novels, Ambia said she really wanted to write a book with characters she could relate to as a young British Bangladeshi. She started writing Black Dragon aged just nine. The book will also be translated in Bangla and distributed in Bangladesh following a launch at the Boi Mela book festival (Dhaka) in February 2010.

“I dedicate at least one hour a day to writing. When I was little I used to tell my mum the story of Black Dragon. She always told me write it down otherwise I’ll forget. If I’m not writing I am reading. It’s my passion and it’s what I love doing.”

The official launch of Black Dragon will take place at OBA Millennium Centre, Featherstall Road, Oldham between 1-3pm on 12 July.
