Arise, Sir Saruman: Lord of the Rings actor Christopher Lee knighted

Last week saw veteran actor Christopher Lee knighted by the Prince of Wales in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. He was honoured for services to drama and to charity.

Lee, originally best known for his performances opposite Peter Cushing in the Hammer Horror movies, has featured in 250 films over the course of a career that has so far spanned 61 years. More recently, the actor has lent his daunting presence to the roles of the evil Middle Earth wizard Saruman in the Lord of the Rings, and the evil space wizard Count Dooku in the final two Star Wars films.

Lee, whose mother was an Italian countess, will next be seen in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, in which he plays neither a vampire nor a wizard but the Jabberwock.

Sir Christopher joked: "I’ve done a lot of films that have become iconic, not necessarily because of me. A whole new career opened up for me when I was in Lords of the Rings and Star Wars.”
