Mr Men author Roger Hargreaves third best-selling author of the decade

Roger Hargreaves died twenty-one years ago but his books are still as popular as ever. Between the years 200 and 2009 Hargreaves has outsold every author other than JK Rowling and Dan Brown. Over the decade his books, which include both the Mr Men and Little Miss series, have sold 11,608,612 copies – or one every 27 seconds.

Hargreaves started writing the series in 1971 after his son Adam, who was then seven, asked him what a tickle looked like. He drew a round orange character with long twirly arms.

By the time of his sudden death from a series of strokes in 1988, aged 53, 39 Mr Men books and 21 Little Miss books had been published. They are now published by Egmont under licence from the entertainment group Chorion, to which the writer’s widow Christine sold the rights in 2004.
