Things to do in Denver when your Un-Dead by Mark Everett Stone
Review by Michelle Herbert
For ten years Kal Hakala has been the Bureau of Supernatural Investigation’s top man, the longest surviving agent in its blood-soaked history. There has been no case he couldn’t crack, no monster he couldn’t kill. Until a plague of zombies in Denver turns into an investigation of a vicious serial killer dubbed The Organ Donor. Fuelled by rage and a hatred of all things supernatural, he dives headlong into the one mystery that could finally kill him.

I have really enjoyed reading this book, the main character Kal Hakala could have been completely two dimensional, but you really enjoy learning who he is and how he became the person you are now reading about. I would be happy to read more of his exploits.
It is a good thing that there are so many secondary characters who stand out, such as Alex who is the person who helps with all the cool gadgets and magic that the department uses on a day to day basis. There is also the fact that the department itself deals in supernatural problems, in this book there is no such thing as vampires falling in love with mortals this is strictly business, if you’re supernatural and are killing mortals then the department deals with it.
It is also interesting how the author deals with famous people in history, slightly like Men In Black but set in a magical world, rather than one dealing with and making Aliens fit in with our world. The story could just be one of guns, blood and guts and magic, but it is also for the fact that Mark Everett Stone has made these characters seem real which makes the book have an emotional core which makes the book better than it would be if this was not there.
