Nigerian writer uses crowdfunding to self-publish six books in six months
Michael Abayomi is a Nigerian-born writer with a rather ambitious goal – to self-publish his epic fantasy series, Guardians & The Lost Paradise. The series has taken him six years to write and over the course of the next six months he plans on releasing all six books through online retailers like Amazon and Barnes & Noble. He has decided to take the self-publishing route for one main reason: he desires to have all six books out there before December 21, 2012.
The series charts the adventures of a 12-year-old boy, Daniel, who through death, finds himself in a magical land called Eden. And in true Alice in Wonderland fashion, Daniel must overcome adversity in order to reach “The Other Side.” This adversity takes the form of a clan of dragon riders, led by the fallen archangel, Lucifer. They seek to prevent Daniel’s passage through Eden, while striving to set free an ancient evil that is destined to bring about the end of the world.
One of the overall themes of the series is death. No stranger to death and its associated emotions, Michael lost his older brother at the age of 12. But it was following the subsequent death of his father 8 years later, that he found the conviction he needed to write these books. And in so doing, he hopes to be able to reach out and help others in overcoming the grief caused by the death of a loved one
To bring his vision to life, Michael has enlisted the help of a professional artist. He has also hired a professional editor, to make sure his words and the important message they convey come out loud and clear. It is to pay for the services of these two individuals, and others just as indispensible, that Michael has turned to crowdfunding. Right now, he is inching closer to his $3,000 goal. But with only 5 days left for his campaign, he is praying for a significant turnaround.
