It was almost too good to begin with, knowing that Joss Whedon would direct and write ‘The Avengers’ movie that hit cinemas earlier this year. I mean, what could be better than the geekiest of them all directing such a project?
Well, how about this?
Joss Whedon has been tapped to write and direct the next Avengers film.
Variety has confirmed that Disney chief Bob Iger announced during an earnings call that Joss Whedon will definitely be writing and directing ‘The Avengers 2’ as well as develop a live action Marvel-themed TV show for ABC.
“Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015,” Disney said in a statement. “As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.”
That Whedon will be directing the next Avengers movie sort of comes as a no-surprise for me. The Avengers has so far made just over $1.4 billion worldwide, so Disney and Marvel would have been smokin’ some crazy crack not to put the same guy who masterminded such a success back at the helm.
The real news is that Joss Whedon will be behind the rumours of a Marvel TV show we’ve been hearing about over the past couple of weeks.
Deadline reported back in late July that they were hearing rumours of a Marvel TV series with a “light” connection to the current Marvel movies, maybe including some lesser known Marvel characters in a “high-concept cop show”. Imagine an Agent Coulson led S.H.I.E.L.D. show, in my opinion.
Either way, all of this Joss Whedon news is good for my soul.
