Pauline Baynes, the artist and illustrator who died on August 1 aged 85, brought the worlds of CS Lewis’s Narnia and JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth to life with her superb line drawings. A blue plaque has been put up at the Oxford home of CS Lewis, author of the popular “The Chronicles of Narnia” series. The plaque, a distinctive memorial denoting the location as historically significant, was unveiled at the start of a two-week conference in honour of Mr. Lewis. Richard and Gillian Saville-Smith, the couple who bought a Narnia website name for their son’s birthday have lost a battle with the estate of CS Lewis to keep it. The Edinburgh bought www.narnia.mobi for their 11-year-old son Comrie, who is a fan of the CS Lewis books. Three signed first edition copies of books by CS Lewis have sold for a total of £30,000 at an auction in Sotheby’s. This was more than three times the price they expected to fetch. The sale in London had experts were predicting that the books would fetch around £3,000 each but bidding on the books was so enthusiastic that The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader sold for £10,625, The Horse And His Boy £10,000 and The Last Battle £9,375. Oxford is set to honour CS Lewis with a blue plaque at his former Oxford home where he wrote his ever popular fantasy series, The Chronicles of Narnia. Lewis lived at The Kilns in Risinghurst, also known as ‘The Gateway to Narnia’, for 33 years and it was here that the fantasy author wrote his successful children’s stories. Three signed, first-edition copies of books by CS Lewis are expected to fetch up to £3,000 each at an auction that will be held next month. The three books, all signed by CS Lewis, are The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Horse and His Boy and The Last Battle. The books are being sold by American Walter McGehee Hopper, who was a friend to and private secretary to CS Lewis. A recent Poll by Play.Com to find the Greatest Book Of All Time has polled 3 fantasy titles in the Top Ten. It will come as no surprise to find that JRR Tolkien’s Lord of The Rings takes top fantasy title although it may surprise some people (not here at FBR) that this book rates a worthy 2nd place in a poll which covers all genres and eras.
