Patricia Briggs’s Mercy Thompson novels to be adapted into comics

Dabel Brothers and IDW Publishing are to co-publish Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series in early 2010. Dabel Brothers Publishing, LLC, is a comic book studio dedicated to bringing many of the best and most popular novels in the world of fantasy to the comic book medium. IDW is an award-winning publisher of comic books, graphic novels and trade paperbacks, based in San Diego, California.

Moon Called is also a direct follow-up to the Mercy Thompson comic book series Homecoming, published by Dabel Brothers in 2008-2009. Homecoming, the Mercy Thompson graphic novel that serves as a prequel story to Moon Called, debuted at #1 on The New York Times Bestseller List for Hardcover Graphic Books.

Mercy Thompson: Moon Called is being written by Derek Ruiz, with art by Clint Hilinski. The first of the four-issue series will be available in February 2010 from IDW, with subsequent issues shipping on a monthly basis thereafter. The graphic novel is scheduled to be published in August 2010 by IDW, and will be distributed by Diamond Books Distributor.

Briggs has written four Mercy Thompson novels to date, the last of which, Bone Crossed, debuted at #3 on the New York Times Fiction Bestseller List, and remained on for weeks after. The next Mercy Thompson novel, Silver Borne, is scheduled for publication in March 2010.

The hob in the garage really startled her the first time she met him, but they’ve been good friends ever since. The urge to share her discoveries with the rest of the world led her to writing. She now resides in Washington State.

The latest Fantasy Book Reviews

It has been a busy week on Fantasy Book Review with new reviews being added daily.

The nominations for the World Fantasy Award were announced in August and we are reading and reviewing the five books that have been shortlisted for the prestigious award. Margo Lanagan’s stunning Tender Morsels has been reviewed while Jim Eaton has also provided an excellent review on Jeffrey Ford’s The Shadow Year (before moving onto The House of the Stag By Kage Baker and Pandemonium by Daryl Gregory). The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman was reviewed by Indra quite some time ago so that will soon be able to say which we believe to be the best of a damn good bunch.

Preita Salyer has been a fantastic addition to the team and has recently reviewed the entire Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs as well as Rick Riordan’s children’s fantasy The Lightning Thief.

Angela Black has reviewed Palimpsest by Catherynne M Valente and Sandy Lender has reviewed the final book in the Bridei Chronicles The Well of Shades. Sandra Scholes has read and reviewed Blackwyrm Book’s Albrim’s Curse, by Trevis Powell and there is also a good debut by an English author, Harriet Goodwin, entitled The Boy Who Fell Down Exit 43.

And on top of all this we interviewed Steven Erikson, the author of the magnificent Malazan Book of the Fallen series. His answers are brilliant, please take the time to have a read.

We are also running a poll on what is the best fantasy film of all time. The poll itself is on all pages so please tell us what you think if you get the chance. Also, feel free to comment below if you think we are missing a classic…

Fantasy Book Review: Blood Bound by Patricia Briggs

Like most people who own their own business, I work long hours that start early in the morning. So when someone calls me in the middle of the night, they’d better be dying …Mechanic Mercy Thompson is woken at 3am by a vampire calling in a favour. He has to deliver a message to a fellow undead and needs a witness that won’t be noticed – and Mercy’s shapeshifting abilities make her the perfect candidate. But the assignment turns into a bloodbath and Mercy attracts the attention of not just a powerful vampire, but the even more powerful demon possessing him. She can count on the supernatural community for protection – and alpha werewolf Adam would like her to rely on him in other ways too – but when it comes to being proactive, she’s on her own.

Preita Salyer has reviewed the second book in the of Mercy Thompson series, discovering that Patricia Briggs managed to retain the high standards set in the first book, Moon Called.

Fantasy Book Review: Moon Called by Patricia Briggs

‘I didn’t realize he was a werewolf at first. My nose isn’t at its best when surrounded by axle grease and burnt oil …’ Mercedes Thompson runs a garage in the Tri-Cities. She’s a mechanic, and a damn good one, who spends her spare time karate training and tinkering with a VW bus that happens to belong to a vampire. Her next-door neighbour is an alpha werewolf – literally, the leader of the pack. And Mercy herself is a shapeshifter, sister to coyotes. As such, she’s tolerated by the ‘wolves but definitely down the pecking order. As long as she keeps her eyes down and remembers her place, the pack will leave her in peace. Hardly a normal situation, but then, Mercy Thompson is not exactly normal herself…and her connection to the world of things that go bump in the night is about to get her into a whole lot of trouble.
