Grassington can be found in the Yorkshire Dales National Parks. It is a remote part of Northern England , thousands of sheep break the silence amongst a latticework of drystone walls separating lush, green valleys. Grassington has proven inspirational to many authors, not least among them JRR Tolkien and William Horwood. The Yorkshire travel guide mentions that a few elves, dwarfs and the odd hobbit would not look at all out of place here. JRR Tolkien encapsulates the English countryside beautifully in The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, describing to the reader the beauty that many us have forgotten exists in our own country. William Horwood’s books features moles and their travels through England and Wales. In the second book, Duncton Quest, the lead character Tryfan states that Grassington is his favourite place in moledom, the only place he has ever been happy.

Striding out among the sheep in the tranquil Yorkshire Dales : Travel General
I have recently re-read Duncton Wood by William Horwood and felt that it deserved a better review than it initially had. The new review can be found by following the link below. It really is a enchanting and spellbinding novel and if you liked Watership Down then you will love it. The rating has recently increased from 8.7 to 8.9 and this currently places Duncton Wood as the 12th best fantasy book of all time.
I have recently re-read Duncton Wood by William Horwood and thoroughly enjoyed it. A full review will follow. I have now started on David Gemmell’s The King Beyond The Gate, a book from the Drenai series. I am currently a couple of chapters into it and it’s already everything I’d expected and hoped for from David Gemmell.
Fancy reading some fantasy based entirely on the life of moles? Well, the books have been written by an author called William Horwood and are spellbinding and beautiful. If Watership Down and the Wind in the Willows are your cup of tea then you should definately give these a shot.
