Born in Liverpool in 1939, Brian Jacques was a storyteller of the old school, whose path to literary stardom was as colourful as his prose. Before becoming a celebrated author, Jacques lived a life of varied experiences, serving as a merchant seaman, a postman, a longshoreman, and even a professional stand-up comedian. His deep, resonant voice also made him a staple on local radio, where he hosted the popular BBC Radio Merseyside program "Rambling with Jacques."
His transition to novelist began at the Royal School for the Blind in Liverpool. To entertain the children there, he began writing stories that emphasised sensory details - scents, sounds, and tastes - to help them "see" the world he created. This manuscript became "Redwall," published in 1986. The novel introduced readers to a medieval world of brave mice and villainous rats, launching a series that eventually spanned twenty-two volumes and sold over twenty million copies worldwide.
Jacques remained a fiercely proud Liverpudlian throughout his life, infusing his work with a sense of community and grand adventure. Until his passing in 2011, he continued to write and tour, leaving behind a legacy as a master of anthropomorphic fantasy who transformed the simple struggle between good and evil into a feast for the imagination.
