Juan Diaz Canales biography

Born in Madrid in 1972, Juan Diaz Canales has established himself as a premier voice in European comics and animation. His journey into the professional arts began at the age of 18 when he joined the animation studio Lapiz Azul. It was there that he formed a pivotal creative partnership with artist Juanjo Guarnido, a collaboration that would eventually produce the internationally acclaimed series Blacksad.

While Guarnido transitioned to Disney's Paris studios, Canales remained in Spain, pursuing studies in Fine Arts and co-founding Tridente Animation in 1996. Despite the distance, the duo developed the concept for Blacksad, a hard-boiled noir set in 1950s America featuring anthropomorphic characters. Since the first volume's debut in 2000, Canales has received numerous accolades, including the Angouleme Best Series Award and multiple Harvey Awards, most recently in 2024 and 2025.

Beyond the feline detective, Canales has demonstrated remarkable versatility. He has penned the scripts for the historical series Gentlemind (co-written with his wife, Teresa Valero) and was handpicked to continue the adventures of the iconic seafaring hero Corto Maltese. Today, Canales continues to divide his time between high-profile comic scripting and supervising television animation projects.
