John Ajvide Lindqvist (born 1966) is a celebrated Swedish author often referred to as the "Stephen King of Scandinavia." Raised in Blackeberg, a suburb of Stockholm, his early life as a street magician and stand-up comedian heavily influenced his rhythmic, engaging prose and his ability to blend the mundane with the macabre.
He rose to international stardom with his debut novel, Let the Right One In (2004), a reimagining of the vampire mythos set against the bleak backdrop of a 1980s Swedish housing estate. The book's success led to two acclaimed film adaptations and established his signature style: "social realistic horror." Lindqvist excels at grounding supernatural elements - vampires, zombies, or ghosts - within the everyday struggles of marginalised characters, exploring themes of loneliness, bullying, and the need for human connection.
His other notable works include Handling the Undead, Harbour, and Little Star. Beyond novels, he is a prolific screenwriter and playwright, often adapting his own stories for the screen, including the film Border, which won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes. Today, Lindqvist remains a titan of Nordic Noir and horror, continuously pushing the boundaries of speculative fiction with his dark, empathetic, and deeply unsettling narratives.
