"Black Sun" is a breathtaking expansion of the fantasy genre, moving away from Eurocentric tropes to draw deep from the rich well of Pre-Columbian American myths. For a lover of mythic fantasy, this novel feels like a tectonic shift--ancient, powerful, and deeply grounded in the earth and sky.

The story centres on the approach of a solar eclipse, a celestial event prophesied to bring the return of the Crow God. We follow Serapio, a young man who has been brutally prepared since childhood to be the living vessel of this vengeful deity. His journey to the holy city of Tova is guided by Xiala, a Teek navigator with the maritime power to command the sea through song. Meanwhile, in Tova, the Sun Priest Naranpa struggles to maintain order amidst political treachery and the fading influence of her priesthood.

What makes this "mythic" is the weight of the divine. The gods in Roanhorse's world are not distant or metaphorical; they are visceral, demanding, and terrifying. The transformation of Serapio is particularly haunting, blending physical agony with spiritual inevitability. The world-building is peerless, featuring giant crows used for transport, intricate social hierarchies, and a sense of history that stretches back long before the first page.

Roanhorse excels at pacing, weaving distinct perspectives into a tightening knot that snaps shut during the Convergence. The atmosphere is thick with the scent of salt water and the dread of shadows. It is a story about the marginalised reclaiming power and the terrible cost of fulfilling a destiny written in the stars. If you crave fantasy that feels both fresh and timelessly epic, this is a mandatory read.
