Rosemary Kirstein is an American science fiction and fantasy author, born in Leominster, Massachusetts, in 1953. She is best known as the creator of The Steerswoman series, a highly praised work that masterfully blends the tropes of fantasy with rigorous scientific inquiry.
She began publishing work of genre interest in 1982. Her first novel, The Steerswoman, was published in 1989 and was nominated for the Locus Award for Best First Novel. The series follows Rowan, a member of a guild of traveling scholars and map-makers, as she applies scientific reasoning to the mysteries of her world.
The complete series currently consists of four novels: The Steerswoman (1989), The Outskirter's Secret (1992), The Lost Steersman (2003), and The Language of Power (2004). The books were originally published by Ballantine/Del Rey, but Kirstein later recovered the rights and has successfully re-released them herself in ebook and trade paperback formats. She continues to actively work on the series, with two more books planned.
