Born in 1979 on Vancouver Island, Emily St. John Mandel is a celebrated Canadian novelist known for her intricate, non-linear narratives and atmospheric prose. Raised on Denman Island, British Columbia, she was homeschooled until age 15, a period during which she developed a foundational habit of writing daily. At 18, she moved to Toronto to study contemporary dance at The School of Toronto Dance Theatre before eventually relocating to New York City to pursue a career in writing. Mandel's literary career spans six novels, beginning with her debut Last Night in Montreal (2009). She achieved international acclaim with her fourth novel, Station Eleven (2014), a post-apocalyptic masterpiece that won the Arthur C. Clarke Award and was a finalist for the National Book Award. Her subsequent works, The Glass Hotel (2020) and Sea of Tranquility (2022), further established her as a major voice in contemporary fiction, with both titles appearing on Barack Obama's annual favourite books lists. Her work often explores themes of art, memory, and the interconnectedness of human lives across time. Today, Mandel continues to write from her home in New York City and serves as a staff writer for the online literary magazine The Millions.
