George Orwell, born Eric Arthur Blair in 1903 in Motihari, India, was a prolific English novelist, essayist, and critic whose work remains the benchmark for political and dystopian literature. Educated at Eton College, Orwell initially followed a traditional path by joining the Indian Imperial Police in Burma. However, his firsthand experiences with the "dirty work of Empire" sparked a deep-seated hatred for imperialism and a lifelong commitment to social justice.
After resigning in 1927, he lived in poverty in Paris and London to better understand the plight of the working class, a period that inspired his first book, Down and Out in Paris and London (1933). His political evolution was further solidified during the Spanish Civil War, where he fought against Fascism and witnessed the betrayal of the revolution by Stalinist forces. This experience turned him into a fierce opponent of all forms of totalitarianism.
Orwell is best known for his late masterpieces: the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) and the terrifyingly prescient Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). Despite battling chronic ill health throughout his life, he produced a vast body of journalism and essays characterized by a dedication to linguistic clarity and objective truth. He died of tuberculosis in 1950 at the age of 46.
