Robert Cargill biography

Christopher Robert Cargill is a master of blending the mundane with the macabre. Born in 1975 and raised in a military family, he eventually settled in Austin, Texas, where he transitioned from a legendary film critic to a powerhouse in fiction and film. Under the pseudonym Massawyrm on Ain't It Cool News and Carlyle on Spill.com, Cargill spent a decade dissecting stories before he began crafting his own.

As a novelist, he is celebrated for his "mythic" sensibilities. His debut, Dreams and Shadows, and its sequel, Queen of the Dark Things, reimagined folklore as a dangerous, visceral force lurking just behind the modern world. He later pivoted to sci-fi with the Arthur C. Clarke Award-shortlisted Sea of Rust and its 2021 prequel Day Zero, exploring the souls of sentient machines in a post-human wasteland.

In Hollywood, Cargill is a frequent collaborator with director Scott Derrickson. Together, they have defined modern horror and spectacle with films like Sinister, The Black Phone, and Marvel's Doctor Strange. By 2026, his influence has only grown, following the release of Black Phone 2 and his novella All the Ash We Leave Behind. He remains a central figure in the "Masters of Horror," living in Austin with his wife and dogs.
