Dan Simmons is a versatile American author born in April 1948 in Peoria, Illinois. Before becoming a full-time novelist in 1987, he spent eighteen years as an elementary school teacher, a career that earned him awards for innovative teaching. His academic background includes an English degree from Wabash College and a Master's in Education from Washington University in St. Louis.
Simmons is celebrated for his ability to weave complex narratives across diverse genres. His debut novel, "Song of Kali" (1985), won the World Fantasy Award, establishing him as a significant voice in speculative fiction. He achieved global fame with the "Hyperion Cantos" series. The first volume, "Hyperion" (1989), won the Hugo Award and is widely regarded as a masterpiece of modern science fiction for its blend of epic space opera and literary homage to the poet John Keats.
His other notable works include the psychological horror novel "Carrion Comfort," the coming-of-age story "Summer of Night," and "The Terror," a historical thriller that was adapted into a television series.
