Simon Jimenez (born 1989) is a Filipino-American author of speculative fiction known for his lyrical prose and innovative storytelling. He earned his MFA in creative writing from Emerson College in 2017. Jimenez spent much of his childhood in various locations, including Canada and the Philippines, before establishing his literary career in the United States.
His debut novel, "The Vanished Birds" (2020), received widespread critical acclaim. This space opera explores themes of time, memory, and found family, and was nominated for several prestigious honors, including the Locus Award for Best First Novel, the Arthur C. Clarke Award, and the British Fantasy Award. In 2021, Jimenez was also a finalist for the Astounding Award for Best New Writer.
His second novel, "The Spear Cuts Through Water" (2022), solidified his reputation as a transformative voice in the genre. A mythic fantasy that utilizes unique narrative techniques, it won the 2023 British Fantasy Award for Best Novel and the Crawford Award. It was also shortlisted for the Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction. Drawing inspiration from authors like Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Dan Simmons, Jimenez's work often centers on queer identity and intimate human connections. He currently resides in Philadelphia.
