David Petersen (born 1977) is an acclaimed American comic book creator who revolutionised modern anthropomorphic fantasy with his sprawling epic, Mouse Guard. A native of Michigan, Petersen's artistic foundations were laid at Eastern Michigan University, where he earned a degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in printmaking. This academic background is evident in his signature aesthetic, which favours intricate line work, earthy textures, and a distinctive square format that sets his books apart on the shelf.

Petersen first introduced the world to the noble Mouse Guard in 2005 as a self-published venture before finding a permanent home with Archaia Studios Press. His work is a sophisticated blend of medieval history and naturalism, focusing on a brotherhood of mice sworn to protect their civilian kin from predators and the harsh elements. Unlike many of his predecessors, Petersen avoids the "cartoonish," instead treating his characters with a solemn, epic dignity.
