John Crowley is an acclaimed American author recognized for his contributions to fantasy, science fiction, and historical fiction. Born in 1942 in Presque Isle, Maine, he spent his formative years moving through Vermont, Kentucky, and Indiana. After graduating from Indiana University, Crowley relocated to New York City to pursue filmmaking, establishing a lifelong parallel career as a documentary scriptwriter.
He published his debut novel, The Deep, in 1975, followed by the science fiction classic Engine Summer in 1979. Crowley gained widespread literary fame with Little, Big (1981), a multi-generational family saga that won the World Fantasy Award and was famously praised by critic Harold Bloom. His other major achievements include the four-volume Aegypt cycle and the 2017 novel Ka: Dar Oakley in the Ruin of Ymr. Beyond his writing, Crowley taught creative writing at Yale University for twenty-five years before retiring in 2018. He remains a recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Literature.
