James Islington biography

James Islington is a distinguished Australian author who has rapidly ascended the ranks of the high fantasy genre. Born in 1981 and raised in southern Victoria, Islington's journey to becoming a novelist was unconventional; prior to his literary career, he spent years running a tech startup. It was only at the age of 30, inspired by the intricate world-building of Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn and Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind, that he began writing seriously.

Islington first garnered international acclaim with The Licanius Trilogy, which began as a self-published debut, The Shadow of What Was Lost (2014), before being acquired by Orbit Books. The trilogy is celebrated for its clockwork plotting, complex time-travel mechanics, and deep philosophical questions regarding fate and free will.

His second major undertaking, the Hierarchy series, debuted in 2023 with The Will of the Many. Drawing heavy inspiration from ancient Rome and dark academia, the series has further cemented his reputation for "hard" magic systems and tight, fast-paced narratives. His latest work, The Strength of the Few (2025), reached the top of global bestseller lists upon its release. Islington currently resides on the Mornington Peninsula with his wife and two children, where he continues to craft some of the most ambitious sagas in contemporary fantasy.
